The Songs and the People

The Songs

Somewhere Over the Rainbow– I learned this in Grade 5 and sang it at a school assembly.  It just makes me happy.

Unto the Hills – The Havergal College School Hymn.

An Irish Lullaby– A favourite song of my Nana’s.  I actually recorded this for her when I was 12 as a Christmas gift. It was then embarrassingly played during the Toast to the Bride at my wedding!

Where ‘er You Walk – A piece from a Royal Conservatory examination.

The Lord’s Prayer – A piece that has been sung over the years at services for my family. It was mostly part of funerals, but was sung by my vocal teacher, Lynn Blaser, during the signing of the registry at my wedding.

Ave Maria (Gounod) – I have sung both the Schubert and Gounod Ave Maria at weddings for friends, and I like this version the best.

Love’s Philosophy – This was a piece I prepared one year for my re-audition with the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir.

Praise My Soul the King of Heaven – The Upper Canada College school hymn. It was also one of the hymns sung at my wedding.

Moon River – My Mom and Dad’s favourite song. It is from the movie “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”, which they went to see on their first date.

Pie Jesu – This is my favourite piece from my favourite Requiem (Gabriel Fauré). I first heard it in 1995 singing with the St. Lawrence Choir in Montreal and I have loved it ever since.

Take Me to a Green Isle – This was part of another Royal Conservatory examination.

Danny Boy – For my husband, Dan.

The People

I was inspired to do this project by my vocal teacher, Lynn Blaser, who passed away, too early, in 2013. At her funeral the prelude and postlude music were recordings that she had done. It was one of the most beautiful things I have experienced, and it was a true gift from her. Another former student of Lynn’s, Baritone, Peter McGillivray, wrote a wonderful tribute to her and said what he learned from her was “To be able to do what one loves is an incredible blessing, but it also comes with a responsibility to share your gift and your joy with others.” Thank you for listening and sharing my gift.

This recording was done for, and is dedicated to my family. To my children, Colin and Erin, that you will be able to hear me sing for many years to come. To my parents, and especially, to my Mom. Thank you for starting me with singing lessons at the age of 8 and always being there to support me through auditions, musicals, choirs, exams and Kiwanis competitions. And to my husband, Dan, for always encouraging me, supporting me through this project and for sharing in the joy of my music.

I would also like to give a huge thank you to Ross Inglis and Doug Blais who helped make this dream a reality.
